Harriet A (Styer) Boop, 89, of 526 Center St., Bloomsburg, died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center, where she had been a patient since May 28.
She was born May 10, 1914, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Samuel P and Nellie (Ohl) Styer. She lived in Bloomsburg since her early childhood.
Mrs. Boop was a 1932 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and a 1934 graduate of the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College.
She was an elementary school teacher, beginning her career in Dushore, where she taught for several years before she began teaching in the Bloomsburg School District, last teaching at the W.W. Evans Elementary School. She taught for a total of 31 years, retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Boop was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn, for many years, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She also served as organist and choir director for many years. She also belonged to the Lutheran Church Women at the church.
She was a member of Fort McClure Chapter, DAR, Bloomsburg, and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Columbia County Chorale and the Women's Civic Club.
When her children were young, Mrs. Boop was active in the PTA and other Bloomsburg school groups.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Harris.
Surviving are her husband, Ariel Charles Boop, with whom she would have celebrated her 62nd wedding anniversary yesterday; two daughters: Mrs. William J (Jane B.) Bissinger and Mrs. James E (Janet F.) Shafer, both of Bloomsburg; a son, John S. Boop of Catawissa; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn, with the Rev. Allen F. Acor, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge, officiating.
Burial will be in the Columbia Hill Cemetery, West Hemlock Township, Montour County.
Arrangements are being handle by the Dean W. Kriner, Inc. Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg.
