Alice was teaching school in Ackerman, Mississippi when she met S. V. "Bill" Burks. They were married there in 1917. The couple later moved to Poteet, Texas with their daughter, Mary Alice, and in 1922 Mr. Burks became Superintendent of Poteet Schools, a post he held until 1937. Shortly after moving to Poteet, a son, S. V. Burks, Jr. was born to the family. Tragedy struck the family in 1927 with the loss of daughter, Mary Alice, to Polio.
The Burks family was highly regarded wherever they lived, being active in their communities, churches, and schools.
