Born in Philadelphia, John Dimond first encountered the Paulist Fathers through a parishioner at his church, a Paulist seminarian. He entered the Juniorate in 1931 and was ordained on February 2, 1943.

Fr Dimond's first assignment was as a curate in San Francisco. There the Superior (Fr. Thomas Burke) assigned him responsibility for the ministry to members of the Armed Forces passing through San Francisco during WWII. He undertook this ministry as well as work at the city and county jails.

In 1946 he returned to Washington, D.C. and completed a BA in Canon Law. The following year he received his JCL from the Lateran University in Rome.

Appointed to the faculty of St. Paul's College in Washington, DC, he taught Apologetics, Canon Law and Liturgy for almost 15 years. Each Sunday he celebrated the televised "Mass for Shut-Ins" offered by the local TV stations.

Fr. Dimond left for Boston in 1963 where he was Superior at St. Ann's parish. He went from there to Rome in 1964 to serve as the Rector of Santa Susanna's parish.

He returned to San Francisco as procurator in 1970 and then in 1974 he had a brief and unhappy stint as pastor in Austin. There he suffered a heart attack and subsequently retired to San Francisco.
