Ellis L. Friedman, 62, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Harrisburg, died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at his home in Florida. Ellis was born Sept. 16, 1947, in Pittsburgh, to his loving parents David L. and Margaret J. Friedman. Ellis met and married his wife of 38 years, Jeanne Pappas of Altoona, in 1972. They became the proud parents of their two "girls" in 1981 and 1983. Surviving children are Eugenia Fien and her husband, Dr. Matthew Fien, of Plantation, Fla., and Elizabeth Friedman, of Washington D.C.; and a sister, LaVonne Dungan, of Belleville. Ellis graduated from William Penn High School in Harrisburg, and received a bachelor of science degree in social sciences and a masters degree in history from Shippensburg University. Ellis was a successful owner and COO of Haagen-Dazs stores in South Florida. He also enjoyed his tenure in public education as a teacher, athletic director and administrator. Ellis served in the U.S. Navy, enjoyed golfing, traveling, and many friendships. Those that know Ellis would refer to him as a mench. Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, followed by a grave-site service 11 a.m. at Centre County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked to make a donation in Ellis's memory to a charity of your choice.
