HAYES - On April 26, 2012, Clyde Lindbergh Smith, 84, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones.
Smitty, as he was affectionately known by everyone, was born in Monarat, Va., in 1927. He served honorably in the Navy and Air Force for 23 years, during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He retired from the Air Force in 1968 as a technical sergeant in the supply career field. He had a second career as a computer controller for Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring after 42 years.
Smitty was a member of many revered organizations. He belonged to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and the Khedive Shriners of Chesapeake. He was a Master Mason of the McDowell Lodge No. 112. He was also an active member of the Warwick Moose Lodge No. 1711 and American Legion Post No. 39.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vergis N. and Thelma Mooney Smith; sister, Pearl Schrader; son, Clarence L. Smith; and first wife Louise Hall Smith.
Smitty is survived by his wife, Mary Belle; brothers, Norman, of Hayes, Robert, of California and Dean, of Oklahoma; nephew, Willard (Betty) Castle; stepchildren, John Hayman, Suzanne Wright, and Thomas (Anna) Hayman; and grandson, Christopher L. Smith.
