William Lemuel Merrell was the son of Elijah and Lucinda Elizabeth (Cook) Merrell. Interested in photography, a family story is that William owned a tintype camera and took pictures as early as the 1870's. On July 2, 1871, he married Elinore "Noda" Burce. Together they had 12 children, 8 sons and 4 daughters. Besides the one listed below, they were:

Betty Merrell Bohannon (1883 – 1960. She was married to Walker Bohannon. His first name was John.

Graham Smith (1886 – 1939), married to Ida Helen Gipson in about 1908 then married to Thelma in about 1929.

Henry F. Merrell. His full name was Henry Floyd (1888 – 1966)

Sarah Isadora "Sally" (1890 – 1990), married to Robert Lee Gibson in about 1905.

Mattie B. (1892 – 1991) married to #1 Eliger Bennett Lewis, #2 Clyde E. Lewis and #3 Clyde W. Sharp.
