Harvey arrived in the Michigan Territory at age of 11, with his parents from Canandiagua, Ontario, New York in 1818 aboard the steamboat "Walk-In-The Water. They first settled in the area called Mongaugon, which is now known as Trenton.
By 1823 he moved to the new township of Van Buren in western Wayne County. There he married Rosinah (Wright) Hubbard on July 6, 1839. Their stones sit side-by-side in the Otisville Cemetery.
