Geo. Richardson
Fatally Injured

A scuffle outside a Sherry
dance hall early this morning
resulted in the death of George
Richardson, 50, Sherry, a
deputy sheriff and dance hall
inspector...
District Attorney Bunde said that
Richardson had taken [name] into
custody and escorted him from the
dance hall after the youth became
engaged in a violent argument with
Joe Lang, the proprietor, over the
latter's refusal to serve him a drink.
Outside the hall, Richardson told
Lang he would take the youth to the
county jail in Wisconsin Rapids...
Richardson had served as a dance
hall inspector for a number of years.
He was employed by the Wood
county highway department as a
road patrolman, and was president
of the Wood county local of the
State, County & Municipal Em-
ployes union (AFL).

The tragic death of George Richardson,
while in the performance of his duties as
a dance hall inspector at Sherry last Mon-
day, should serve to focus public attention
upon a situation which cannot be permitted
to continue if Wood county is to avoid fur-
ther endangering the lives or well-being of
the men who are charged with responsibility
for maintaining order at public dances...
...the fact remains that Richardson was
being resisted in the performance of his
duty, and the heart attack which ended his
life was most certainly brought on by the
attendant exertion and excitement...

[The commission found that] ...he
was acting as a county dance hall
inspector at Lang's ballroom in the
town of Sherry....
...The commission further found
that Richardson's death "was caus-
ed or accelerated by the emotional
and physical strain of the fight
and that death occurred in the
course of his employment by Wood
county."
