Confederate officer. Was a farmer in Frederick County, Virginia in 1860 with a wife, Louisa and three children. At that time his parents, George and Elizabeth Brinker were also living with him. In August 1861 he enlisted in Co. D, 51st Virginia Militia serving in General Floyd's brigade in Tennessee. Inducted into Captain Cutshaw's company of the Virgina Light Artillery as a 1st Lieutenant. Eventually assigned to Co. A, 3rd Virgina Heavy Artillery Division. Particpated in battles at Fort Donelson, Carnifax Ferry, the Knoxville campaign and conflicts in the Shenandoah Valley. Served as post inspector and muster officer. Mustered out April 15, 1865 with the rank of Major.
