FROSTBURG — Dr. Martin Mayer Rothstein, 97, of Frostburg, died Monday, March 5, 2012, at the WMHS Rehab and Nursing Center.
Born Sept. 23, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late George Rothstein and Rose (Inselman) Rothstein. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Abraham "Al" Rothstein.
He was a graduate from Temple University and also the Hahneman Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa.
Martin was a military veteran serving in the Army from 1940 to 1945 where he was awarded six battle stars while serving in the European Theatre of Operation during Word War II.
He was a member of the Frostburg Rotary Club and the American Legion Post 24 of Frostburg, the American Medical Association, World Health Organization and B'nai B'rith. He served on the original Board of Directors of the Allegany County United Way.
Dr. Rothstein began a private medical practice in New Kensington, Pa., from 1946 to 1948. In 1948, he moved his practice to Frostburg, and served the people of Allegany County until 1988. For many years, he was the college physician at Frostburg State College and had helped establish a hospital in Jeremie, Haiti, for the Peace Corps. Dr. Rothstein represented the Western Maryland District as President of the American Lung Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians and performed athlete examinations for Frostburg State College, Beall High School, Mount Savage High School and for the Coaches All Star Classic. He served as President of the medical staff of Frostburg Community Hospital, was on the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital and was an intermittent physician at the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Cumberland.
He is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Anita M. Rothstein, of Cherry Hill, N.J.; niece, Fran Gelman and husband Marc, of Moorestown, N.J.; nephew, Mark Rothstein and wife, Elizabeth, of Baltimore; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Graveside services were conducted on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Montefiore Cemetery, Philadelphia.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
