Frederick August Fels was born in the village of Grafenstaden in the Alsace region. At that time (1882), Alsace was part of Prussia. In 1919 Alsace was restored to France. Now Grafenstaden is part of Illkirch-Graffenstaden, a suburb of Strasbourg.

On an application for a US passport in 1923, he reported that he immigrated in May of 1906, traveling from Le Havre, France to New York City (NYC). That he became a naturalized citizen on Nov 18, 1914 in NYC. And in 1923 he was working as a Chef in Philadelphia.
