He served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois from 1879 to 1887 and in 1893, and was elected as a Democrat to represent Illinois' 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1875 to 1879. He brought international notoriety to Chicago by hosting the Colombian Exposition, the World's Fair of 1893, which saw over 27 million people visit the city during its six months. Mayor Harrison was assassinated the day before the Exposition was to close by a disgruntled office seeker.
