MT. VERNON — — James W. "Jim" Adams, age 90, of McLeansboro, departed this life 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at Harre Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow the visitation.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, McLeansboro, with full military honors by American Legion Post 106. Bill Reed, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. A reception for those attending the services will follow at the family home.

Jim, the son of the late Grace Leona (Bridwell) and Harry W. Adams, was born Sept. 6, 1921, in McLeansboro. He was a Class of 1939 graduate of McLeansboro Township High School, attended Southern Illinois University and was a proud Marine, serving in World War II.

On Sept. 16, 1946, in McLeansboro, Jim married Ruth Maulding; she died April 26, 2000.

Jim purchased the Adams Greenhouse business from his father in 1949 and remained its owner and operator until retirement in 1985.

Jim served as both a board member and president of M.C.C.S. 100; was a charter member of Elks Lodge 1882 and the American Legion, longtime member of McLeansboro Golf Course, the McCoy Memorial Library Board and Hamilton County Historical Society and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

He loved golf, Wii Bowling, reading historical novels and playing cards.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; brother, Allan Adams; grandson, Keeling Adams; and his parents.

Mr. Adams is survived by sons Stan Adams of McLeansboro and Kendall Adams and companion Sandy Scott of Broken Arrow, Okla.; daughters Jan Belva of Mt. Vernon and Wendi Adams of The Colony, Texas; grandchildren Kristin Frost of Houston, Kerri Sallusti of The Colony, Texas, Kelly Owens of Woodlawn, April Hammer of St. Louis, Brandi Tennyson of McLeansboro, Lynndi Tennyson of Dahlgren, Nicole McCants of Tulsa, Okla., Reid Adams of Bixby, Okla., and Kasey Fennell of Zama-Shi' Kanagawa, Japan; great-grandchildren Nick Keel, Halen Frost, Madeline, Olivia and Sophia Sallusti, Ethan and Landon Adams, Kathleen and Gibson Hammer, Mary Cate and Luke McCants and Addison Kesler; a sister, Nedra Metheney and husband A.J. of McLeansboro; a cousin, Dita Campbell; and a niece and nephew, John Maulding and Amy Crossett.

Special friends left to mourn his passing include Charlene Vaughan, Carl and Emy Dietz, Jo Bonan, Chuck and Doris Jones, Marian Farlow, Ginny Smith, Marian Green, Ted and Debbie Broyles, Cheryl Ventress, Teresa Baker and Brooke Haney, Bob Noel, the residents of Heritage Woods and the girls at Senior Enrichment.

Memorials, in Jim's name, to Hamilton Memorial Hospital, McCoy Memorial Library or Hamilton County Historical Society would be greatly appreciated.
