Gustavus G. Paul, 68, of 320 Cherry rd., NE, life-long resident of this city, head of G. G. Paul Agency and organist at St. Mary's Catholic church for about 50 years, died at his residence, Sunday evening, after a short illness.
Mr. Paul attended St. Mary's parochial school here and St. Vincent's college at Beatty, Pa. On his return to this city he learned the printer's trade with the Massillon American, a local weekly newspaper, and later worked as a compositor for The Independent when its editor was Robert P. Skinner, present United States ambassador to Turkey.
After several years in the newspaper bussiness he taught school in Jackson township. Later he returned to this city and entered the newspaper bussiness again as a correspondent for several papers. He later entered the insurance business.
"Active in Politices"
Mr. Paul was active in locial political circles for many years. Shortly after celebrating his 21st birthday he was elected justice of the the peace here and held that office for about 20 years although not in successive terms. He also served as clerk of city council. He was a central committeeman of the democratic party for a number of years. He studied law under private tutors and when 50 years of age was admitted to the bar and started to pratice law here. He organized the G. G. Paul Agency which he headed at the time of his death.
Mr Paul was well known in local musical circles. He became organist at St. Mary's church when quite young and filled that position for nearly a half century. He also was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus lodge here.
He is survived by three sons, James, Robert and Harold, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Wendell J. Flury and Mrs. O. E. Sibila, of this city, and Mrs. L. D. Gable, of Canton; three brothers, John Paul, of Cleveland and Albert J. and Frank Paul, of Massillon; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Kettl, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Frank Schneider, of this city; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a. m. at St. Mary's Catholic church. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery. The body will be removed from the Heitger funeral home to the residence early this evening. The Massillon Independent, Dec. 18, 1933
