Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Captain in the Mounted Bengal Artillery, British Army. During the attack on Lucknow, India, September 25, 1857, Captain Olpherts charged on horseback with the 90th Regiment when they captured two guns in the face of heavy fire from grape shot canon. Afterwards he returned under the fire of musketry to bring up limbers and horses to carry off the captured ordnance. For gallantry in the face of the enemy he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. He retired from actice service as a Lieutenant General and was Knighted in 1886.
