My Grandma Carpenter contracted the Spanish Flu in 1918. Hopefully after my mother was born in April. Her Husband worked as an electrician for the Army Fort near Junction City, Kansas. The troops from WW1 brought the flu back from Spain. Grandpa must have brought it home to Grandma. It damage her body and she was house bound and bed-ridden when my mother, Virginia was seven. She was told she would not live to see her second daughter reach the same age. Auntie Ruthie was five at the time. Grandma lived from event to event. Often planning outings when there was not a holiday to look forward to. She lived to see me born in 1943 and died 18 months later.

She would crochet and make by hand my smocked baby dresses while sitting in bed. I, Linda Hillary Hannah, have one of her ivory crochet hooks and a tapestry needle of ivory.
