Gladys was the daughter of Zook and Maggie (Harless) Galloway. Her early childhood was spent in several of the small sawmill towns in southwestern Louisiana. The youngest of five children, she was born into a loving family that included two brothers, Buster and Fern and two sisters, Bessie and Mildred. By the time she reached her teens her family had settled in the Simpson community of Vernon Parish and it was there Gladys grew up on her parent's farm. She attended Simpson High School where she played on the girls basketball team. At the age of 16 she graduated high school and subsequently attended Business College in Beaumont, Texas. There she met and married Sam H. Sproles, Jr. in 1935 and it was there that their first child, a son, was born in 1936. With the country still in an economic depression, times were difficult and during the next five years they had to move frequently to maintain employment, finally settling in Port Arthur, Texas in 1941. Gladys was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother and during the war years also worked at various secretarial jobs. Their second child, a daughter, was born in 1945. In the years that followed Gladys operated her own secretarial services business out of her home and subsequently took full time secretarial employment. Following her divorce in 1953 she married Winston Bryant and eventually settled in Los Angeles, California. There she worked for the Los Angeles school system where she was secretary to the president of Los Angeles Mission College for many years. Upon retirement she moved with her husband to Hesperia, California where she was active in various church and community affairs. She always loved music and played piano. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and placed her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Gladys and Winston enjoyed travel in their motor home with family and toured almost every one of the states in the union. After her husband died, she and her daughter lived together and enjoyed travel and life in warm southern California. In passing Gladys leaves her children, grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She will be truly missed by all her family.
