Born in Cumberland, Maryland, Annan joined Company “G” of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, commanded by Colonel Turner Ashby. In the spring of 1862 he fought under General “Stonewall” Jackson during his brilliant “Valley Campaign.” Annan fought in all of the cavalry engagement including Harpers Ferry, Port Republic, Cross Keys and Harrisonville.After the death of Colonel Ashby, Annan was assigned to General J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry command and fought at the battles of Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness Campaign. Finally at the battle of Winchester, Virginia (September 19, 1864), he was captured and sent to the prison at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released and rejoined his regiment just as they were being surrendered at Charlestown, West Virginia.In 1870 he moved to St. Louis and went to work for J.W. Booth & Sons. In 1879 he formed the firm of Houseman & Annan. The firm later became the Annan-Burg Company, commission agents and brokers for flour, grain and feed mills. He was an active member of the ex-Confederate Historical and Benevolent Association of St. Louis.
