Geo. Schwartz Was Born And Raised In This City
Mr. George W. Schwartz, former resident of Independence, died at his home in Dubuque Saturday morning at 11 o'clock following a short illness. He had been in failing health for some time, but his condition did not become serious until two days before death.
He was born February 22, 1865, at Independence. For 40 years he was a resident of Dubuque, where for 15 years he worked at the Carr, Ryder and Adams factory until he retired three years ago.
Mr. Schwartz was united in marriage to Miss Louise Heller on March 15th, 1892. She survives, together with two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Heckman of Fort Dodge; Mrs. Edward H. Nank, of Dubuque; two sons, Louis Schwartz of Savannah, Ill.; and Frederick Schwartz forward on Coach Rollie Williams' varsity basketball team at the University of Iowa.
He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Zimpfer of Walker and Mrs. E. C. Wolters of Burlingame, Kans.; one brother, Mr. Albert Schwartz, of Melrose Park, Ill.; one half brother, Mr. Max Mueller, of Milwaukee, Wis.; and one grandchild, David Edward Nank. Mr. Rudolph Leytze, prominent Independence businessman, was a cousin of Mr. Schwartz.
Mr. Schwartz was a member of the Immanuel Congregational church and a charter member of the Dubuque lodge of Eagles.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Haudenshield funeral home. The Reverend J. Nevin Lyerly, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated. Burial was in Linwood cemetery in Dubuque.
Those from Independence who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Leytze, Mr. Henry Kortemeyer, Mr. Louis Soener, Mr. George Soener, and Mr. Carl Leytze."

George W. Schwartz, 71, a former resident of Independence, died at his home in Dubuque Saturday morning, March 7, 1936, of arterioschlerosis, having been seriously ill only since the Thursday before. The funeral services were held at the Haudenshield funeral home Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. J. Nevin Lyerly, Congregational pastor, officiated. Interment was in Linwood. Attending the funeral from Independence were Mr. and Mrs. R. Leytze, Henry Kortemeyer, G. C. and L. C. Soener and Carl Leytze, and Raymond Zimpher and family, Walker. Mr. Schwartz was a cousin of the Messrs. Leytze and Mrs. M. S. Carver, city.
Mr. Schwartz was born in Independence, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schwartz, oldtime, pioneer Independence residents. He grew to manhood here and had been a resident of Dubuque for over thirty years. There he married Miss Louise Heller, by whom he is survived. There are four children. Mrs. W. J. Heckman, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Edward H. Nank, Dubuque; Louis, Havana, Ill. And Frederic, of Iowa City, member of the Iowa U. basketball team the last two seasons; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Zimpher, Walker, and Mrs. E. C. Wolters, Burlingame Kan.; one brother, Albert, Melrose Park, Ill.; a step-brother, Max Mueller, Milwaukee, Wis.
Mr. Schwartz was a man held in high esteem, a friendly, kindly man, well liked and the news of his death comes as a sorrow to his oldtime Independence friends."
