Dr. Leslie Long came to Richmond Hill (Ways Station), Georgia in 1938. He met Lucy Bunce Long, a Great, Great, Great, Grandniece of Issac Newton and married in 1943 in the Martha-Mary Chapel built by Henry Ford in Richmond Hill. They received a wedding gift from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford, a brand new built house. He worked with Henry Ulkberg to transform black gum bark into Rayon, then into socks. Mr. Ford beleived there were uses for all types of materials, and did not beleive in waste. After Mr. and Mrs. Ford passed away, the Ford Plantation and Richmond Hill was sold to a paper company. Dr. Long and his wife Lucy moved away for him to continue his education. He obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture and Master of Science degree in Agronomy from the University of Georgia. His Ph.D was received from the University of Flordia. Upon retiring in 1982, Dr. Long and his wife returned to Richmond Hill, GA. In 1998, he received the Friend of Ford Award from the Henry Ford Heritage Association for his book he and his wife Lucy produced on Henry Ford and Richmond Hill, Georgia in 1998.
He was a real Southern Gentlemen from the word go. It was a real pleasure to have him call me "friend". I met him in 1996 and had taken him around the Detroit Area with my buddy Frank, and he enriched my life with his wonderful stories about Henry Ford, and his friendship. He passed away in 2000, and is very missed by his wife Lucy Long, along with family and friends. Dr. Long was a member of the Henry Ford Heritage Association and the Richmond Hill Historical Society. He and his wife were one of the founders of the Richmond Hill Historical Society. They both were founding donor members for the Ford Motor Piquette Plant. Which was the first plant owned by Ford Motor,and is where the Model "T" was first made.
