REPORT OF ACCIDENT: Hiawatha Daily World - Tuesday - October 1, 1918

HEADLINE: SKULL CRUSHED WHEN TRAIN STRUCK AUTO
The auto of Gus Appleoff was demolished at Hamlin Sunday evening by a Grand Island engine. Mr. Appleoff and youngest son, John, were just starting to drive to their home. When they drove across the tracks the engine hit the car. Both occupants were thrown out. Mr. Appleoff was badly cut and bruised about the head. John received a fractured scull, and was cut and brusied about the head and back. Both were rushed to the Sabetha hospital. Mr. Appleoff was able to be about Monday. It was necessary to operate upon Johnny. Tuesday afternoon he was still in a stupor and his condition is regarded as very critical.

John Rudolph Appleoff, 13 year old son of Gus Appleoff, of near Hamlin, died in the Sabetha Hospital Friday afternoon. His death came as the result of an auto accident at Hamlin Sunday evening. The auto in which Mr. Appleoff and John were riding was struck by an engine at Hamlin. John's skull was fractured. He was hurried to the Sabetha hospital and an operation was performed on the slight hope of saving his life. It was without avail and Friday John passed away. His funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Brethren Church at Morrill
