Miriam M. Burns

Miriam M. Burns, 82, of Altoona died Friday evening at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus, after a brief illness. She was born in Altoona, the daughter of Maurice and Verna (Ackerman) Bell. She married Daniel C. Burns Nov. 26, 1945, in Altoona. He survives her.
Also surviving are three children: daughter, Maureen A. Hanekamp and husband, Dave, of Pittsburgh, son Mark D. Burns at home and son, Matthew W. Burns of Altoona; six grandchildren: Amy L. Snyder and husband, Jeff, Joseph D. Deible and wife, Jillian, Matt "LT", Brendon and Brittney Burns and Jenna Long; and six great-grandchildren: Lance and Natasha Hanekamp, Lydia, Claire and Myles Snyder and Alaina Hamilton. Also surviving is a brother, Alan Bell of Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by son, Denis A. Burns.
Mrs. Burns was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School. She retired as a secretary from the personnel department of Westvaco in Williamsburg. Miriam was a member of the Altoona Camera Club and was an avid amateur photographer. She also enjoyed traveling all over the world and ceramics. She was a volunteer with the Children's Reading Program and a member of Christian Mothers at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, where she also served for many years as a lector. She loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2007, at Jones Funeral Home, 1222 13th Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated Monday evening. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to Food for Families Food Bank, 2201 Union Ave., Altoona; the Meals-on-Wheels Program of Blair Senior Services, 1320 12th Ave., Altoona; or the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona.
