Dorothy M. Bent, age 90, of Palmyra, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra. Dorothy was born October 16, 1921 in Quincy, Illinois to Harry S. and Lillian P. Obert Wood. She married Jesse Lionel "Lonny" Bent on February 8, 1946. He preceded her in death August 3, 2007. Survivors include:daughter, Karen Bent of Columbia, Mo. ; son, Craig Bent and wife Kathy of Palmyra; grandchildren, Lindsey Bent of Palmyra; Cameron Bent and Austin Bent of Quincy; sister, Bonnie Peters of Quincy; nieces, Barb Fahrenbach, Madison, Wisiconsin and Nancy Bradshaw, Quincy; numerous great nieces and great nephews; and a close family friend who was loved like a daughter, Vesta Mckee Baker, Durant, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kevin Bent; brother, Harry Lee Wood; grandparents, John and Sarah Margaret Wood and Prudence Williams. Dorothy was a 1939 graduate of Quincy High School and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Pure Ice Company in Quincy. She later worked for the Ben Franklin Store as a floral designer in Palmyra and later retired from the Palmyra Spectator in 1983. She was a charter member and the first president of the Palmyra Town & Country Club. She was a member of a local card club in Palmyra for over 50 years, and a member of the Missouri Press Association. After her retirement, she volunteered for many years at Maple Lawn Nursing Home and was recognized as volunteer the month in October of 1998. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palmyra. Casket Bearers are Walt Drebes, Larry Parsons, Butch Augspurg, John Lewis, Mark Reid, and Ron Kraft. Honorary Bearers are Bill Huffman and Bill Andresen. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra with Rev. Dewayne Larenson officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy, Illinois. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel.
