On arrival in New York City from Ireland in 1851, Brady enlisted in the U.S. Army. He spent five years in Texas rising to the rank of sergeant and then transferred to Fort Craig, New Mexico. He participated in campaigns against the Apache and Navajo. In 1861 he joined the New Mexico Volunteers as a first lieutenant and later promoted to captain. He fought at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. In 1862 he married Maria Bonifacia Chavez from Corrales, New Mexico. In 1864 he was appointed as commandant at Fort Stanton, and then served at several other New Mexico forts until his discharge in October 1866, at the brevet rank of Major.
Brady and his family lived on a ranch four miles east of Lincoln. He was elected Sheriff in 1869. In 1871 Brady was elected as the first representative from Lincoln County to sit in the Territorial Legislature. In 1876 he was re-elected sheriff.
