He married Catharine Baughman on 9 Dec 1856 in Knox Co., OH. Note that in her Civil War widow's pension documents, it shows that Matthew & Catharine married in Utica, Licking Co. However, county marriage records show they married in Knox Co. The Morrison family lived in Utica.

They had four children: Elmer T.; John W.; George F.; & Flora Jane (Krider).

Matthew was killed in action during the Civil War. He served in Co. C, 82nd Ohio Infantry. Note that Catherine's widow's pension records state that he was killed at the Battle of Dallas (GA). The 82nd participated in the Battle of New Hope Church (in the Dallas area) the day he was killed. The Battle of Dallas was a few days after his death. The "U.S. Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865" shows he died near Dallas, GA.

After Matthew's death, Catharine married Samuel Stricker on 6 Feb 1868 in Wyandot Co., OH.
