Samuel was born January 1, 1887 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was the second of six sons born to John James Smurl and Helen E. Ferguson. His mother died in 1897 and his father married a woman named Ann Higgins a year later. It was Ann who converted the Smurl family to Catholism and took the boys to church.

On May 20, 1908, Samuel married Mary A. McAfee at St. Dominic's Church in Parsons. They had nine children: Helen (1908), Jimmy (1910), Marie (1914), John (1915), Rose (1919), Sarah (1922), Edna (1924), Gerald (1926) and Joan (1926.) He worked as a trackman in the coal mines for most of his life. He died 14 April 1943, in Plains, Pennsylvania.

Samuel Frederick Smurl. 57. life-long city resident, was found dead last night at 6 when city police broke, into his room at 38 East Northampton Street after unsucessful attempts to rouse him failed.

Detective John Williams and Palinclothesman George Koval were summoned to the rooming house by Carl Giordano, owner, who reported that Smurl made no answer to repeated calls and rapping.

Dr. C. A. Miller, deputy coroner, was summoned and reported to police that Smurl, who had been suffering from a heart ailment, had probably died in his sleep.

The victim was employed as a battery attendant by Bell Telephone Company. He had lived at the East Northampton Street for a year, police were told.

Mr. Smurl was a member of St. Dominic's Church and the Holy Name Society.He was formerly employed by the Pressed Steel Company of this city.

Surviving are his daughters, Mrs. Clifton Evans, city; Mrs. Myron Langdon, Kingston, and Mrs. Reed Daw. city: two sons, James, Plains, John of this city; 11 grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Patrick Kennedy, Philadelphia, and two brothers, William and James Smurl, both of this city.

Body has been removed to the M. J. McLaughlin Funeral Home, 142 South Washington Street, from where the funeral will be held.
