Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Harold J. Gross, age 72, of St. Cloud, who passed away January 6, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Entombment will be in the Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud.
Relatives and friends may call from 4-8:30 p.m. on Monday, January 9th, at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud; Parish Prayers will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Harold was born in Watkins, MN on May 21, 1939 to William and Alma (Steman) Gross. Harold attended grade school at St. Anthony's in Watkins and graduated from St. Boniface High School in Cold Spring, MN. After graduating from high school, Harold joined the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Harold was in the 82nd Airborne Division. After serving in the Army for three years, he attended the St. Cloud Business College after which he began his career in the Trucking and Transportation business. Harold currently was the owner of H & G Trucking, Inc. He took pride in his business and especially made certain he provided excellent service to his customers at all times.
Harold married Georgian Lahr at the Church of St. Nicholas in St. Nicholas, MN and to this union they were blessed with one son Kevin. Harold and Georgian opened their home to high school exchange students from Sweden, Finland, and Holland. Their first exchange student Johan Gumaelius from Sweden came back to St. Cloud after spending time in Sweden and has always been a second son to Harold and his family.
As a man of great faith, Harold served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Harold was active in the St. Cloud Youth Hockey Association for many years as a coach and the Director of the SCYHA Summer Camp program. He was inducted into the "Wall of Distinction" at the MAC ice arena in St. Cloud. Hockey has been a part of Harold's life for forty years, first as a dad coaching his son, then as a coach for other players, and most recently as a proud papa of his grandsons. Harold loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with family and friends.
Harold is survived by his wife Georgian, son Kevin and daughter-in-law Nicole (Denne) Gross and their sons, Josh and Jordan of Maple Grove, their Swedish son Johan Gumaelius and his wife Michelle and their daughters Emmie and Sofie, of Woodbury, brothers and sisters, Rosemary Kaufman of Cold Spring, Fr. Richard Gross of Watkins, Alice Gross Krebsbach and husband Ted of Cold Spring, Ron Gross and wife Karen of Brooklyn Park, brother and sister-in-law Ken and Jan Lahr of St. Nicholas and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents William and Alma Gross, sister Betty Pfannenstein, brother-in-law Earl Kaufman and father and mother-in-law George and Luverne Lahr.
