Services for Gussie V. Person Adams, who was Lane College's treasurer for 50 years, will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul CME Church with Bishop Williams Graves and the Rev. C. Dewitt Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mrs. Adams, who served on the college's board of trustees, died Friday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Madison County, daughter of the late Nat and Fannie Person, and was the widow of the Rev. James A. Adams. A native of Hurts Chapel, she was a member in three churches: the Salem, St. Paul and Lane Tabernacle CME churches. Mrs. Adams was educated in Madison County schools and the former Merry High School. She received a teacher's certificate in 1925 and a bachelor's degree in 1927, both from Lane, which also awarded her an honorary doctorate and dedicated its 1974 homecoming to her. She was a former county schoolteacher, a volunteer instructor at Lane and treasurer until her retirement in 1975. She served many years as president of the Women's Missionary Society for the Jackson District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The district honored her at a 1980 banquet. Mrs. Adams also was president of the Epwarth League and the Jackson Ministers Wives Club, a member of local church missionary societies and a delegate to district, annual and general conferences. In addition, she was a member of the Interdenominational Ministers Wives group and of Church Women United and was a consultant at CME workshops.
