Mr. Smith died Dec. 20, 2011, at his residence. He was born May 24, 1929, in Vinalhaven, Maine, to the late Alda E. Smith and Frank Jouquist. He worked in Vinalhaven as a ship hand and joined the U.S. Army on Sept. 4, 1948. He married Eva W. Koenig on July 2, 1955, in Stuttgart, Germany.
He served overseas in Germany and Korea, in the military police and transportation divisions. He retired from the Army on July 31, 1971, as a staff sergeant. His military medals include the Good Conduct Medal, 5, National Defense Award and the Army Occupation Germany medal.
Mr. Smith also worked for civil service as a Veterans Affairs police officer at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center in Temple from Nov. 8, 1971, until he medically retired on April 21, 1986. He was a locksmith in Killeen from 1986 to 2000.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Eva Smith of Killeen; daughters, Melanie Plott and her husband Foyster of Blairsville, GA; Martina Picerno and her husband Gino of Germany; Rose Rea and her husband, Donald, of Harker Heights; Christine Kelly and her husband, James, of Killeen; Elizabeth Smith of Gatesville; and Ellen Welch and her husband, Otis, of Moody; brothers, Lewis Romer of Vinalhaven, Maine, Victor Romer of Pensacola, Fla.; sisters, Paula Howard Gorham of Maine, Lois Thomas of Connecticut; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
