Walter 'Red' Nolker, 79, of Lawson, died January 7, 2004 at Liberty Hospital. He was born March 26, 1924 in the Lawson-Knoxville area, the son of James A. and Vena (Moss) Nolker.
He graduated from Richmond High School in 1940.
He married Mary Ann Basham in Richmond.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines.
After returning home from the war, he resumed farming and raising cattle, preferably Angus Cattle. He received the Balanced Farming Award from the University of Missouri in 1951, the Ray County Outstanding Young Farmer Award from Richmond Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1955, the Master Farmer Award from the Agribusiness Council of the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce in 1972, and the Western Missouri State Farm Management award from the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the University of Missouri in 1980.
Red was a member and attended the Old Union Christian Union Church his entire life, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Elder and Trustee.
He belonged to many organizations and served as director of P.W.S.D. #1 for many years. He served on the Knoxville School Board for 12 years. He was a board member and president of Lawson Feed and Supply. He served as a Director of Lawson Bank.
He was a 50 year member of Bee Hive Lodge A.F.& A.M.#393, the Odd Fellows Lodge #528, the Lawson VFW, the American Angus Association, and was currently a trustee of the Old Union Cemetery Board.
Red is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sandra Nolker of Richmond, MO; Gordon and Nancy Nolker of Lawson, MO; one sister, Kathleen Thacker of Richmond, MO; grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Stephen, in 2002.
Funeral services were January 10, at Old Union Christian Union Church, with Rev. Mike Polo and Rev. Terry Smelcer officiating. Burial was in the Old Union Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sammie Gorham, Paul Jones, Donald Nolker, Rich Bush, David Vaughn, Jeff Bye, Tom Pope, and Dudley Billings.
Honorary pallbearers were John Hill, Bob Grove, Jon Dana, Charles Eugene Nolker, Richard E. Nolker, Eddie Rhodus, Jim Cox, Randall Elliott, Lowell Elliott, Harry Morris, Bob Jones, Wayne Cox, Robert Pritchard, Paul McKee and Dale Maddux.
