He was born July 31, 1922 in New Martinsville, the son of the late John R. and Ida Gigley Stewart.
He was a retired supervisor at PPG Industries, a member of the Masonic Lodge #39 A.F. & A.M., the American Legion Post 28, New Martinsville, Moose Lodge #931 New Martinsville, a member and past trustee of the New Martinsville United Methodist Church, and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary June Burgess Stewart; four sisters, Goldie Jeffers, Mary Steepleton, Dell Bowers and Garnet Lehman; and a brother, William Stewart.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ellen (R. Steven) Snider of Hundred, WV; two sons, Jon (Judy) Stewart of Charlotte, NC and James "Jamie" (Lee Ann) Stewart of New Martinsville; two sisters, Vaughn Shepherd and Ida Casto, both of Paden City, WV; seven grandchildren, Kristopher and Mitch Snider, J.R. and Jerod Stewart, and Adam, Staci and Tyler Stewart; and a great granddaughter, Jayden Stewart.
Family received friends on Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville. Funeral services were held Monday at 11:00am at New Martinsville United Methodist Church, 10 Howard Jeffers Drive, New Martinsville, with Rev. Michael Atkinson officiating. Interment in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville, where military graveside services were conducted.
