Josiah Meador was a soldier of the Revolutionary War, enlisting under Captain Joseph Renfroe, engaging the Indians of lthe frontier who were incited by the British to commit butchery against the Colonists who were at war with the mother country. He saw service on Wolf Creek in Monroe County and at Fort Donally near Lewisburg. He also marched through Tennessee to Chicamauga in Georgia, fighting the Indians back from the frontier which was then along the Blue Ridge and Cumberland mountains.

After this expedition he marched with George Rogers Clark to the Illinois country where they beat back the Indians and British at Kaskaskia and Vincennes. After this service was completed he came back to the Bluestone Valley where he married a daughter of Robert Lilly who had settled there ten years before.

Josiah Meadows came from Bedford County, VA and was a soldier in the continental armies for two or more periods. The facts stated are taken from his declaration of or pension in 1832, when he was seventy-four years of age. He enlisted in the early spring of 1778, under Captain Joseph Renfroe; marched with his company to Jarrett's Fort, on Wolf Creek, now in Summers County (WV), where the company was divided, and the part Josiah was with was sent to Keeney's Fort on the Greenbrier, where he was stationed at the time of the Indian attack on Donnally's Fort. Upon the expiration of his enlistment, he again enlisted in the company of Captain Isaac Taylor, and with his company and regiment, the latter commanded by Colonel John Montgomery, marched through the Holstein country to the Indian town of Chicamauga, which they destroyed. Josiah then marched with the expedition of Colonel George Rogers Clark through the Illinois Country. Returning from this service, he was with a part of the American Army, which guarded British prisoners captured at Yorktown. Rev. Josiah Meadows married Judith (Juda) Lilly, a daughter of Robert Lilly, founder of the great Lilly family of this section. Since the marriage of Josiah and Juda, the two families have married and inter-married until their histories in many cases blend very closely together. The Meadows and Lilly families were two of the largest in Summers County (WV), and they were among the first settlers of the Bluestone and Jumping Branch regions. If a candidate for public office in this county had the support of the Meadows and Lilly families, he was sure of election. Rev. Josiah Meadows was the first Baptist minster in this part of the county, and he had the honor of organizing the first church in this section. The Bluestone Baptist Church was organized in1798, in the house of Rev. Josiah Meadows on Little Bluestone River. The house was a double log cabin with a dirt floor, where the people met to worship for several years. Eventually a rude log church was built, it had but one door and no windows. In this building they worshipped for many years. The membership was small and scattered from the mouth of East River in Giles County, VA to the marshes of Coal River in Raleigh County. The Bluestone Baptist Church is now located at Jumping Branch. The Revolution pension records show that in 1840, when Josiah Meadows was eighty-three years of age, he was living with his son, Green Meadows, in Mercer County, VA now Summers County, WV. All of Rev. Josiah Meadows' family took the name of "Meador" after moving to Bluestone River. Josiah and Judith (Lilly)Meadows were the parents of 12 children.
