American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Ireland, he was issued the award on October 26, 1864 for his actions as a chief bugler with the 6th New York Cavalry, US Army, on October 19, 1864, at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia He joined the US Army in November 1861 and was assigned to the 6th New York Cavalry Following the Battle of Cedar Creek, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in January 1865, and promoted to the rank of first lieutenant the following May. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Capture of colors of 44th Georgia Infantry (C.S.A.)."
