The fourth son of Jesse and Catherine Sivey King, Philip King was born in Franklin (then Fairfield) County, OH on March 13, 1840. Philip married Rebecca Bobb on 20 June 1861, their only child Susan was born in March 1862 and by August 1862 Philip had enlisted in the Union Army. Philip, as well as brother Henry, joined the 99th Ohio Volunteer Infantry organized at Lima, OH, Philip and Henry served in Company F. The 99th primarily saw action in TN and GA, but also participated in actions in KY. During the Battle of Nashville on 15 Dec 1864, probably while engaged at Shy's Hill, Philip received a mortal wound through his right lung. Philip died on 16 Dec 1864 in the Cumberland Field Hospital, located between what is now Church Street and West End Avenue, bounded by 16th and 17th Avenues North. On 17 Dec 1864 Philip was buried in the Government Section of City Cemetery in Nashville, lot 10305. However, the story does not end there, Philip was disinterred sometime in 1866/67 and moved to his final resting spot on the family farm in Mercer County, OH. Later, this burial ground, that exists on private property, would come to be known as the King Family Cemetery.
