Civil War Nurse. She was known as "Gentle Annie" by the wounded Union Army troops she cared for, and was twice wounded herself on the battlefield. She came to the attention of Union Major General Phillip Kearny during the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, who commended her efforts highly, and was one of three Union Army nurses to be awarded the "Kearny Cross" for her field service. She served with the Union's Army of the Potomac through to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in April 1865.
