In Memory of Arthur Bates
(Editor's note: The family of the late Airman 1 Arthur D. Bates, Jr., who died as the result of a tragic auto accident on February 9, 1969, have requested the following article be placed in the PRESS in memory.)

The late Airman 1 Arthur D. Bates, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bates of Florence Miss. was born August 31, 1948. He graduated from Florence High School and attended Hinds Jr. College at Raymond before entering the Air Force Technical Training Center at Keesler AFb, Mississippi for specialized schooling in communications electronics.

On August 31, 1968 (his 20th birthday) the late Arthur D. Bates, Jr. was united in marriage with the former Janice Marie Crowder, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Crowder of Van Winkle in Jackson.

Young Bates had been stationed at Keesler for some seven months, where his wife established residence near the base, when he was critically injured in a automobile accident on Feb. 1. Following the accident, he remained in critical condition in the Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Jackson until his death on February 9, 1969.

In addition to his wife, Mrs. Janice Marie Crowder Bates and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur D. Bates, Sr. of Florence, survivors include:Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bates of Plain, and Mrs. William Webb of the Briarhill Community; three brothers, Danny Lee, Donald Ray and Harry Harron of Florence; four sisters, Linda Sue, Barbara Ann, Janice, Katherine, and Debra Dianne all of Florence; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Funeral services for Airman Bates were conducted for the Baldwin Funeral Home Chapel on February 11 with interment in the Florence Cemetery. Bates was a Baptist.

Though he is gone, his memory lingers with those who knew and loved him, and who rejoice that they will be re-united with him.
