Don L. Turner (1925 - 2011)

Don L. Turner, 86, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, surrounded by his family. Funeral: 10 a.m. Saturday at Arlington Funeral Home. Interment: Moore Memorial Gardens. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Arlington Funeral Home.

Don was born on the Fourth of July, 1925, with his twin brother Ben in Springhill, Ark. He grew up during the Great Depression and was called to war in 1943 at the age of 18. Always proud of his service during World War II, he was a Marine assigned to the 4th Amtrac Battalion which took part in the Pacific island invasions of Roi Namur, Guam, and Okinawa. As was typical of this generation, Don returned from the war, put service behind him and helped build and support this nation through hard work and moral values. In 1949 he married a very young girl from Texarkana named Louise Bowden. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. He raised his three sons by example, always displaying respect and patriotism for country and instilling a work ethic second to none. Don went to work for General Motors in 1954 at the Arlington plant and dedicated the next 34 years to working hard for GM and providing support for his family. He retired in 1988. Don was the finest husband, father and friend you could always count on and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Another good Marine of the Second World War has departed this earth and will never be forgotten by this nation. Dad, you were the best. God, Country and Corps. Semper Fidelis.

Survivors: Wife of 62 years, Louise Turner; sons, Don, Randy and wife, Rose, Clinton and wife, Emily; grandchildren, Ryan, Jennifer, Casey, Danielle, Sandy and Katey; and great-grandchildren, Dayton and Dillon.
