Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Clara Loudine Slout, pioneer San Luis Valley woman who died last Thursday. Rev. J.L. Chestnutt of the M.E. Church was in charge of the services.
Mrs. Slout was born July 28, 1872 at Shaw’s Station, Lee County, Illinois, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edwin J. Shaw. She came to the Valley with her parents in 1873 and spent her girlhood in the South Fork area.
She was united in marriage with Edward G. Slout of Del Norte, Sept. 10, 1891. The union was blessed with three children, two of whom survive. The surviving children are Mrs. Russell Walker of Monte Vista and William Slout of Del Norte. Her husband and one son, Charles, are deceased.
Mrs. Slout spent most of her life at the old Shaw homestead west of Del Norte and on the Slout ranch a mile east of South Fork. In 1912, the Slout family moved to Del Norte. Mr. Slout passed away in the early fall of 1923.
One brother, William Shaw of Canon City is left to grieve. Two brothers, Ernest and Byron Shaw died within the past two years.
