US Senator. He graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1839, studied law at Harvard Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1842 and was legal attorney for Gilmanton Iron Works, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives in 1846, New Hampshire Secretary of State in 1846, newspaper publisher, reporter of the New Hampshire State Supreme Court, and secretary of the Republican National Executive Committee, in 1860. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Minister Resident to Switzerland, and appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Daniel Clark, serving from 1866 to 1867. Not a candidate for reelection, he served as a fellow at Bates College and was editor of the Concord Daily Monitor, until his death at age 68.
