Hilda Irene Matson was the sixth of seven children born to August Matson (1868-1950) and his wife Augusta Olivia Brand (1870-1938). She was bonr on a farm near Lafayette, Illinois, but when she was a baby her parents moved to a large farm near Kiester, Minnesota.

Hilda's parents had both been born in Sweden, and came to America as teenagers in the 1880s. Her paternal grandmother was Mrs. Anna Matilda Matson (1828-1908, who also came to America as a widow.) Her maternal grandparents were Johan August Brand (1842-1926) and his wife Johanna Vilhelmina Lund (1846-1925), who remained in Sweden.

Hilda maried George William Lubbess (15 Oct. 1913-5 June 1982), and they lived at Okanogan, Washington. They had three sons, Luverne Gerald Lubbess, Lloyd Virgil Lubbess, and Lee R. Lubbess.
