He commanded militia men at the Battle of Lexington and Concord, where he led the fiercest Minuteman attack on British troops. He then commanded a division of Continental troops under George Washington in the Battles of Long Island, Harlem Heights and White Plains. After Benedict Arnold's treason, General Heath was given Arnold's Hudson River command, where he was in charge of defending the strategic positions at West Point.
