Jacob was a son of Ludwig Ast and Anna Maria Schoenthaler. He was born in Illischestie, Bukovina, Austria. On February 11, 1848 in Milisauti, Bukovina, Austria, he married Katharina Wendling. They lived for a time in Illischestie and had 14 children there: Friedrich, Johann, Anna, Johann, Phillip (Find-a-Grave memorial number 20862158), Caroline (Find-a-Grave memorial number 21467578), Katharina (Find-a-Grave memorial number 22629627), Jacob, Frank, Jacobina K., Elisabeth (Find-a-Grave memorial number 48423036), Joseph, Ludwig "Louis", and Edward "Adam". In 1888 Jacob and Katharina and most of their surviving children all migrated to Ellis County, KS, where they settled amongst other immigrant Bukovinans.
