Family History by John B Akers

The Akers moved to New Mexico from Southern Texas in the 1920s. J.B. Jr and brother James Hogan were born on a farm to JB Akers Sr and Hope Thompson halfway between Ysleta and Clint, Texas. The Akers had farmed land in southern Texas inherited from Mr. Akers grandfather. Unfortunately the Akers lost the farm due to a bank panic and a banker ran off with all his mony. Losing his money, the Akers could not pay his note and lost his land in 1921. Soon afterward his father landed a job as a ditch rider in Garfield, New Mexico. In 1924 the Akers found their way to Las Cruces, where Akers Sr worked as a ditch rider. The family later moved up a ways to Hatch because of the milk producers were convenient to the new venture of cow farming. Later they bought a farm with a milkbarn and ran a grocery store. All their children went to Hatch High School. His mother lived for many years and had illness that required care and had to spend time with his sister Nedra in Kingman Arizona before returning to New Mexico.
