DAVENPORT — Martha Jane Bergthold, 90, of Joliet, Ill., formerly of Davenport, Iowa, died Monday, October 31, 2011, at Salem Village Nursing Home, Joliet, Ill., of natural causes after an extended stay.
Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park.
Martha was born on March 13, 1921, in Aransas Pass, Texas, to Earl and Fannie (Merriner) Gilbert. She married Vincent Bergthold in 1941 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and they were happily married for 53 years.
Martha was very active in her church and evangelizing people for the Lord. She enjoyed studying the Bible, sewing, writing letters, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her loving, gentle spirit and her scrumptious apple pies.
Survivors include a daughter, Chalah Chavaneau-Ellis (Michael), Austin, Texas; sons, Vincent Jr. (Pamela), Plainfield, Ill., Jerry, Richmond, Va., and Thomas (Lisa), Plainfield, Ill.; sister, Marjorie, Houston, Texas; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent, sons, Richard and Paul, and granddaughters, Kimberly and Juli.
