Lewis Medlin Hodges was born May 12. 1891, in Benjamin, Knox County, Texas. He was the second child and first son of Martha Catherine Williams and James M. Hodges. They were married in Hill County, Texas, October 21, 1883. Their first child, Musa Lee Hodges was born in Hunt County August 24, 1884. The Hodges moved to Knox County before Lewis was born. He was named for a man named Lewis Larkin Medlin who lived near the family. It is not known if James Hodges worked on Medlin's ranch or if they were coworkers on a ranch owned by a third party. The second son of Musa Hodges Patterson was named Lewis Medlin Patterson.

Two additional siblings were born to the Hodges family: Walter Randolph Hodges (1895) and Birdie Hodges (1898). Martha Catherine Hodges died around 1902.

Lewis Hodges is found in the military in 1920 - Camp Eldridge in the Philipines. In 1930 he lived in Detroit - occupation auto worker. In 1942 he lived at 14540 Wilshire in Detroit, where he worked for Chrysler Motors.
