Civil War Veteran, Private, Company E, 42nd PA Infantry (1st PA Rifles / 13th PA Reserves Corps / Tioga Rifles Company in the 1st Bucktail Regiment), enlisted 22 Apr 1861. He was wounded in the right lower leg 13 Dec 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg, MD, recovered after 20 months in hospitals and home care, and then remained in service until 25 Jun 1864. In the Bates PA Volunteers book he is listed as Edward K. Allen, but in other documents, to include Veterans Schedules, unit reunions, and veterans pension lists, he is listed as Edwin R. Allen. Edwin R. Allen was the son of Thomas Allen and Deborah Walker, born 16 Jun 1841, Cazenovia, Madison County, NY. He migrated with his family to Delmar Township, Tioga County, PA and was raised on the family farm. Edwin married Isabella "Bella" Mary McCarter, a teacher, in her parents home 09 Jun 1869. She was the daughter of Elisha McCarter and Eunice Bacon, born 18 Sep 1842, Delmar Township, Tioga County, PA. Before 1874, he moved to Juniata Village, Adams County, NE, as a laborer with Isabella and their she delivered their two sons, Edwin L. (about 1874) and Oscar (about 1878). By 1890, although there is no census, they are cited often in the local Wellsboro newspapers participating in local veterans and relief activities. Around 1894, they divorced. In 1900, Edwin is a carpenter in Wellsboro, and around this time, they had sold their property near Pearl Street, Wellsboro. She lived in Brooksville, PA, working as the Matron of a Veterans Orphanage; and then she was living in Loyalsock, Lycoming County, PA, working as a Matron for the Home for the Friendless institution. February, 1909, they remarried in Washington, DC, as announced in Wellsboro newspapers. In 1910, Edwin was a carpenter in Washington, DC living with Isabella and son Edwin L. Allen, a hospital bookkeeper. Oscar Allen was working for the railroad in Buffalo, NY. Isabella died 11 May 1912 in Washington, D.C., and Edwin returned to Wellsboro. Edwin R. Allen died 24 Nov 1918 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, PA.
