U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Bethel College, in 1897, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1899, practiced law and was a teacher, plus a newspaper editor. In 1905, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1929. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, serving (1929-37) and presiding judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, (1937-55). He died shortly after leaving the bench at age 80.
