Sam Smith Hill, jr was born June 21, 1921 in Ironton, Ohio to Sam Smith Hill, sr and Georgia Davies Hill. Sam joined the Navy on April 30, 1942 and attained the rank of Chief Quarter Master before retiring in 1965. He served his country on various ships, mostly destroyers. He served in the Navy during WWII, Korea, the Bay of Pigs, and Viet Nam. He was on board the USS Owl during the invasion of Normandy and then later was transferred to the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was also a drill chief at Great Lakes Naval Training Station during his stint in the Navy. His last ship to serve on before his retirement in 1965 was the USS Luce, a guided missile frigate. Mr. Hill was stationed all over the East Coast and in Spain during his naval career. Sam married Delma Torres in Tampa, Florida in 1946. After his retirement in 1965 he joined the Merchant Marine and attained the rank of Captain. Upon retiring from there he and his wife, Delma, and their children, Sam III, John, Jane, Clifton, and William all moved to Ponce De Leon, Florida. The whole family moved to Rockport, Texas in the early 80's. Sam was a Most Worshipful Master at the Rockport Masonic Lodge #323 as was his father, Sam sr and his grandfather, John A. Hill before him. Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Delma, and his five children and their spouses; Sam III and Betty, John and Leslie, Jane and Bill Brown, Clifton and Michelle, and William(Billy). Grandchildren; Sam IV, Joe and Sarah; Joshua, Leah, Dahvid, and Ariel; Johnny, Eric and Lee Brown; Jessica, Noel and Clifton; William, Jill, Jenna.
