After her husband's death, she became a working mother. First as a saleslady at Woodward & Lothrop, an upscale department store in Washington, DC. Then as a secretary at the War Department, which moved into the Pentagon, when it was completed in 1943. After World War II ended and the US Air Force was established, she then worked for the Military Air Transport Services, a Unified Command headquartered at Bolling AFB in Maryland. She retired from there in the early 1960's.
