William was born in Clinton, Ohio on December 28, 1807, the son of John McGrew (1786 - 1832) Rachel (McCoy) McGrew (1785 – c. 1830), while Anna McVay was born in Pennsylvania on November 3, 1806, the daughter of Isaac McVay and Mary (Rude) McVay. John McGrew and Rachel (McCoy) McGrew were the parents of John Lucas McGrew (1806-1890), William McGrew (1807-1893), Charles McGrew (1812-1895), Alexander McGrew (1812-Unknown), Gladys McGrew (1816-Unknown), Melinda McGrew (1820-Unknown), Thomas McGrew (1823-Unknown), Mary Jane McGrew (1824-Unknown), James McGrew (1826-Unknown), Kirby McGrew (1827-1915) and Ruth McGrew (1829-Unknown).

On August 5, 1862, the day after John A. H. McGrew, volunteered to serve in the Knox County company that would become Co. F of the 86th Illinois, Fernando also volunteered, the two brother-in-laws serving side by side in the Civil War, both surviving the war. In the fall of 1870, Fernando and Mary Jane moved the family from Knox County to Princeton, Missouri in Mercer County. Their last three children were born there before Mary Jane (Mcgrew) Humphries died on March 27, 1877. It is not known for certain where her earthly remains were laid, but they may have been laid in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mercer County, Missouri, as this is where Fernando's 2nd wife is buried. Now to continue with the biography of John A. H. McGrew; John A. H. McGrew was married to Amanda A. Stephenson on October 9, 1857 in Knox County, Illinois. Amanda was born on June 21, 1839 in White River, Noblesville, Indiana, the daughter of Richard Stephenson and Laura W. (Finch) Stephenson. Richard S. Stephenson was born December 29, 1817 in Lewis County, Kentucky, the son of John Stephenson and Alice (Morrison) Stephenson, while Laura W. Finch was born on December 15, 1820 in Strawtown, Hamilton County, Indiana.

Sandee believes "they went there for a short time, because his father, William McGrew was living there and he was a 'Trader of Goods' (also a Merchant and a Farmer), also, he d. in 1893. John Albert Senn was also a Brakeman on the railroad, as were most of the men in my family..anyway back to Belle.. when Belle was young it seems that her parents moved around somewhat and also lived with Amanda's parents for sometime and then lived next door to them for a while..That was in the Richard Smythard STEPHENSON and Laura W. FINCH household.
When Belle and John Albert were getting up in age, her, (Belle's) Aunt, Octivia STEPHENSON-PETTIBONE came to live with them, she was a Nurse and I think maybe one of them, Belle or John A. was ill and she took care of them."

Some records have a 3rd daughter being born to John and Amanda, though I am not sure this is very likely. This daughter was Helena "Helen" or "Lena" McGrew, who was born c. 1871/72 in Webster County, Iowa. Unless she was born during this first few months of 1871, this would have been well after John A. H. McGrew had passed away.
Lena McGrew was married to J. W. Hunt, who was 22 years of age, on October 25, 1890 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. According to a site on familysearch.com Lena'a parents were John Mcgrew and Amanda Stephenson, while J. W. Hunt's were Ralph Hunt and Amelia Fredregill.

When Burkhalter had about 100 volunteers, he led the Maquon company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. There on August 27, 1862, he was elected by the men of the Maquon company to be their Captain and Captain Burkhalter and 93 of his volunteers were mustered in as Co. F of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched of the gates of Camp Lyon, Capt. James L. Burkhalter leading Co. F, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Three weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the coming years. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederate Army withdrew from Kentucky and McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp.
During these next two and a half years, the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, John A. H. McGrew was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina just to name a few and also marched with Sherman to the Sea.
After the war came to a close, the surviving members of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C), where they marched down Pennsylvania on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Private John A. H. McGrew was discharged from the service along with the rest of the surviving members of the 86th and by the end of June, they were back home with their families in Central Illinois.
Little is known of the activities of John A. H. McGrew after the war at this time. The first reunion of the 86th Illinois was held in Peoria, Illinois on the 25th Anniversary of the Regiment being mustered into service, August 27, 1887. At the time of the reunion, the surviving members of the 86th have a mailing address of Bennett, Nebraska for Private John A. H. McGrew. However, it is now believed that they later discovered that Private John A. H. McGrew had died in Knox County, Illinois in 1870. Private John A. H. McGrew died on __________ __, 1870 in Knox County, Illinois and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Herman Methodist Church Cemetery in Herman, Illinois in Knox County.

On August 5, 1862, the day after John A. H. McGrew, volunteered to serve in the Knox County company that would become Co. F of the 86th Illinois, Fernando also volunteered, the two brother-in-laws serving side by side in the Civil War, both surviving the war. In the fall of 1870, Fernando and Mary Jane moved the family from Knox County to Princeton, Missouri in Mercer County. Their last three children were born there before Mary Jane (Mcgrew) Humphries died on March 27, 1877. It is not known for certain where her earthly remains were laid, but they may have been laid in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mercer County, Missouri, as this is where Fernando's 2nd wife is buried. Now to continue with the biography of John A. H. McGrew; John A. H. McGrew was married to Amanda A. Stephenson on October 9, 1857 in Knox County, Illinois. Amanda was born on June 21, 1839 in White River, Noblesville, Indiana, the daughter of Richard Stephenson and Laura W. (Finch) Stephenson. Richard S. Stephenson was born December 29, 1817 in Lewis County, Kentucky, the son of John Stephenson and Alice (Morrison) Stephenson, while Laura W. Finch was born on December 15, 1820 in Strawtown, Hamilton County, Indiana.

Belle was a Teacher for many years, while John farmed. However, when the family moved to Burwell, Nebraska, he was a Merchant. Sandee believes "they went there for a short time, because his father, William McGrew was living there and he was a 'Trader of Goods' (also a Merchant and a Farmer), also, he d. in 1893. John Albert Senn was also a Brakeman on the railroad, as were most of the men in my family..anyway back to Belle.. when Belle was young it seems that her parents moved around somewhat and also lived with Amanda's parents for sometime and then lived next door to them for a while..That was in the Richard Smythard STEPHENSON and Laura W. FINCH household.
When Belle and John Albert were getting up in age, her, (Belle's) Aunt, Octivia STEPHENSON-PETTIBONE came to live with them, she was a Nurse and I think maybe one of them, Belle or John A. was ill and she took care of them."

Some records have a 3rd daughter being born to John and Amanda, though I am not sure this is very likely. This daughter was Helena "Helen" or "Lena" McGrew, who was born c. 1871/72 in Webster County, Iowa. Unless she was born during this first few months of 1871, this would have been well after John A. H. McGrew had passed away.
Lena McGrew was married to J. W. Hunt, who was 22 years of age, on October 25, 1890 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. According to a site on familysearch.com Lena'a parents were John Mcgrew and Amanda Stephenson, while J. W. Hunt's were Ralph Hunt and Amelia Fredregill.

When Burkhalter had about 100 volunteers, he led the Maquon company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. There on August 27, 1862, he was elected by the men of the Maquon company to be their Captain and Captain Burkhalter and 93 of his volunteers were mustered in as Co. F of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched of the gates of Camp Lyon, Capt. James L. Burkhalter leading Co. F, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Three weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the coming years. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederate Army withdrew from Kentucky and McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp.
During these next two and a half years, the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, John A. H. McGrew was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina just to name a few and also marched with Sherman to the Sea.
After the war came to a close, the surviving members of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C), where they marched down Pennsylvania on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Private John A. H. McGrew was discharged from the service along with the rest of the surviving members of the 86th and by the end of June, they were back home with their families in Central Illinois.
Little is known of the activities of John A. H. McGrew after the war at this time. The first reunion of the 86th Illinois was held in Peoria, Illinois on the 25th Anniversary of the Regiment being mustered into service, August 27, 1887. At the time of the reunion, the surviving members of the 86th have a mailing address of Bennett, Nebraska for Private John A. H. McGrew. However, it is now believed that they later discovered that Private John A. H. McGrew had died in Knox County, Illinois in 1870. Private John A. H. McGrew died on __________ __, 1870 in Knox County, Illinois and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Herman Methodist Church Cemetery in Herman, Illinois in Knox County.

John Albert Senn was also a Brakeman on the railroad, as were most of the men in my family..anyway back to Belle.. when Belle was young it seems that her parents moved around somewhat and also lived with Amanda's parents for sometime and then lived next door to them for a while..That was in the Richard Smythard STEPHENSON and Laura W. FINCH household.
When Belle and John Albert were getting up in age, her, (Belle's) Aunt, Octivia STEPHENSON-PETTIBONE came to live with them, she was a Nurse and I think maybe one of them, Belle or John A. was ill and she took care of them."

When Burkhalter had about 100 volunteers, he led the Maquon company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. There on August 27, 1862, he was elected by the men of the Maquon company to be their Captain and Captain Burkhalter and 93 of his volunteers were mustered in as Co. F of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched of the gates of Camp Lyon, Capt. James L. Burkhalter leading Co. F, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Three weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the coming years. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederate Army withdrew from Kentucky and McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp.
During these next two and a half years, the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, John A. H. McGrew was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina just to name a few and also marched with Sherman to the Sea.
After the war came to a close, the surviving members of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C), where they marched down Pennsylvania on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Private John A. H. McGrew was discharged from the service along with the rest of the surviving members of the 86th and by the end of June, they were back home with their families in Central Illinois.
Little is known of the activities of John A. H. McGrew after the war at this time. The first reunion of the 86th Illinois was held in Peoria, Illinois on the 25th Anniversary of the Regiment being mustered into service, August 27, 1887. At the time of the reunion, the surviving members of the 86th have a mailing address of Bennett, Nebraska for Private John A. H. McGrew. However, it is now believed that they later discovered that Private John A. H. McGrew had died in Knox County, Illinois in 1870. Private John A. H. McGrew died on __________ __, 1870 in Knox County, Illinois and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Herman Methodist Church Cemetery in Herman, Illinois in Knox County.

Now to continue with the biography of John A. H. McGrew; John A. H. McGrew was married to Amanda A. Stephenson on October 9, 1857 in Knox County, Illinois. Amanda was born on June 21, 1839 in White River, Noblesville, Indiana, the daughter of Richard Stephenson and Laura W. (Finch) Stephenson. Richard S. Stephenson was born December 29, 1817 in Lewis County, Kentucky, the son of John Stephenson and Alice (Morrison) Stephenson, while Laura W. Finch was born on December 15, 1820 in Strawtown, Hamilton County, Indiana.
According to the book entitled "BIGGS-MCGREW", two daughters were born to John A. H. McGrew and Amanda A. (Stephenson) McGrew. They are;

Belle was a Teacher for many years, while John farmed. However, when the family moved to Burwell, Nebraska, he was a Merchant. Sandee believes "they went there for a short time, because his father, William McGrew was living there and he was a 'Trader of Goods' (also a Merchant and a Farmer), also, he d. in 1893. John Albert Senn was also a Brakeman on the railroad, as were most of the men in my family..anyway back to Belle.. when Belle was young it seems that her parents moved around somewhat and also lived with Amanda's parents for sometime and then lived next door to them for a while..That was in the Richard Smythard STEPHENSON and Laura W. FINCH household.
When Belle and John Albert were getting up in age, her, (Belle's) Aunt, Octivia STEPHENSON-PETTIBONE came to live with them, she was a Nurse and I think maybe one of them, Belle or John A. was ill and she took care of them."
2. Anna F. McGrew, born __________ __, 1860/61 in Knox County, Illinois.
Some records have a 3rd daughter being born to John and Amanda, though I am not sure this is very likely. This daughter was Helena "Helen" or "Lena" McGrew, who was born c. 1871/72 in Webster County, Iowa. Unless she was born during this first few months of 1871, this would have been well after John A. H. McGrew had passed away.
Lena McGrew was married to J. W. Hunt, who was 22 years of age, on October 25, 1890 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. According to a site on familysearch.com Lena'a parents were John Mcgrew and Amanda Stephenson, while J. W. Hunt's were Ralph Hunt and Amelia Fredregill.

When Burkhalter had about 100 volunteers, he led the Maquon company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. There on August 27, 1862, he was elected by the men of the Maquon company to be their Captain and Captain Burkhalter and 93 of his volunteers were mustered in as Co. F of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched of the gates of Camp Lyon, Capt. James L. Burkhalter leading Co. F, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Three weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the coming years. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederate Army withdrew from Kentucky and McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp.
During these next two and a half years, the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, John A. H. McGrew was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina just to name a few and also marched with Sherman to the Sea.
After the war came to a close, the surviving members of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C), where they marched down Pennsylvania on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Private John A. H. McGrew was discharged from the service along with the rest of the surviving members of the 86th and by the end of June, they were back home with their families in Central Illinois.
Little is known of the activities of John A. H. McGrew after the war at this time. The first reunion of the 86th Illinois was held in Peoria, Illinois on the 25th Anniversary of the Regiment being mustered into service, August 27, 1887. At the time of the reunion, the surviving members of the 86th have a mailing address of Bennett, Nebraska for Private John A. H. McGrew. However, it is now believed that they later discovered that Private John A. H. McGrew had died in Knox County, Illinois in 1870. Private John A. H. McGrew died on __________ __, 1870 in Knox County, Illinois and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Herman Methodist Church Cemetery in Herman, Illinois in Knox County.

F of the 66th Ohio Infantry, was a member of the Minnesota Soldiers Home in Minnehaha Falls, Minneapolis, Minnesota. John Jacob Lutz died in 1923. Their mortal remains were laid in the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.
